Imagined Identities - Mixed Media Paintings
IMAGINED IDENTITIES is a series of mixed media paintings that evoke at once a dark yet playful dreamlike quality. Using images from my own photos, they are then painted with acrylic or oil paints that are applied in additive and subtractive layers to reveal emerging imagery that surprises and pushes the imagination beyond logic into the unexpected. What results is a merging of inner and outer realities that form a complex narrative of human relationship to the natural environment.
Hand Colored Linocut Prints
Creating linoleum block and wood block prints is a process that requires thinking backwards to produce a desired image, as well as focusing on the intricacies of design and creating darks and lights. I love the meditative hands on process of carving and the magic of printing and creating hand made multiples from the same image, then hand coloring them so that each piece is unique. The images are inspired by nature filtered through my wild imagination.
In our urban environments, birds are the only true wildlife we see on a daily basis. Perhaps we connect with them so deeply because they remind us of our own inner wildness and the freedom we long for. Perhaps it is the beauty of their form and graceful movement. These paintings are from birds in the US and Mexico and are painted in acrylic on canvas.
